3 Reasons to Switch to a Different Hot Water System

Janell Hatchett • Mar 19, 2020

If you have an old hot water system in your home that doesn't work all that well any longer, then you may have decided to replace it. While making a straight like-for-like switch makes sense in some cases, in other cases you might want to install a different type of system.

What are the potential benefits of switching system types?

1. Reduce your purchase costs

Individual states and the government often offer incentives if you are willing to switch an old hot water system for one that is more energy efficient. These incentives reduce the price you'll pay for a new system.

Typically, these offers apply to greener options, like solar and heat pump products. Depending on the offer and your eligibility, you could get a cash rebate or a certificate that you sell or give to your installer to get a discount on your final bill.

2. Reduce your running costs

Some hot water systems are more cost efficient than others. Your current system may have been cost effective when you originally installed it; however, this doesn't mean that it has the cheapest running costs now.

Developments in solar and heat-pump technologies have created a new range of systems that you might not have been able to use when you installed your current one. These options could reduce your running costs.

For example, if you currently use an electric hot water system, then your running costs will be relatively high. This way of heating water tends to be more expensive than alternatives like solar, gas and heat pumps.

You may also find that your water usage needs have changed since you last put in a new hot water system. For example, if all your children have left home, then you'll use a lot less water now.

If you currently have a storage tank, then it makes sense to switch to a smaller size. This reduces the amount of water you heat at any given time. Or, you could move to an instantaneous hot water system which only heats water when you need it.

So, it makes sense to compare your current running costs with average costs for different systems before you decide which product to install. You could make significant savings on your water and energy bills.

3. Get a more environmentally-friendly solution

Older hot water systems aren't always as energy efficient as newer ones. They often have more negative effects on the environment.

If you're keen to introduce greener products into your home to reduce the impact you have on the environment, then switching to a different hot water system can make a significant difference. You can reduce harmful emissions by making this kind of switch.

For example, if you currently use a hot water system that runs on gas but switch to solar power, then you reduce your carbon dioxide emissions. If you go with a heat pump, then you take things a step further. Heat pump products typically emit fewer harmful greenhouse gases than any other hot water system.

If you're worried about switching to a natural energy source with no back-up, then you can add a gas or electric booster to the system. This booster heats water at times when a pump or solar panels can't create enough hot water for your needs. You won't use the booster all the time, so you get a greener solution.
